So…Who Should Use VoIP?

Really, any business who wants to save money and have the ability to make calls from anywhere!

All business should now be moving to hosted VoIP systems. There are many advantages, but the main ones are:

Cost Saving – When it comes to replacing your current phone system, you do not need to spend $1,000s to $10,000s on a new one, simply rent from a hosted supplier. National and North American calls are usually included in business VoIP packages

Redundancy – if you have a phone system at your office you have 1 point of failure, if the phone system dies it can take days to fix. In a hosted phone system there are many redundant servers and locations which can provide your services if one dies the phone system will simply continue to run on another server.

Convenience – You can keep your SaskTel number!

Flexibility – You can have a ‘softphone’ on your smartphone – this will allow you to make a call ‘from your office’ when you are actually on the beach in Jamaica – with no international roaming! ?

Nothing is Perfect – Some Pitfalls of VoIP

Using a Cheap Phone System – Like with any business line, you should use a business-grade phone system. As with everything, cheap is cheap for a reason. A good handset will provide you with a better quality experience and last longer. From my experience, this advice is especially relevant to VoIP phones. A client of ours who insisted on buying cheap handsets experienced around 1 handset breaking per week up until they bought better ones. Buy Nice or Buy Twice.

Firewalls – Have your IT guy or gal check and configure your router correctly, a badly configured router/firewall and severely impact the quality of your VoIP calls.

VoIP Relies on Internet Speed – Most internet lines should now be fast enough to allow for a small number of handsets, however, once you expect to have more than 5 concurrent calls at any time it may be time to think of adding another internet line to run your VoIP.

Setting up VoIP for Your Business
